Coffee Shops + Smoking - Baristas
Coffee Shops + Smoking
I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and I'm looking at a few different cities in the area in which I could open a shop. The problem is, most of the cities around here have adopted a smoking ban.

Many of the people I know from the coffee shops around here (myself included) don't visit the shops as often now that the smoking bans are in place. For those who don't know, this of course means no smoking inside, but also no smoking within 50 feet of any building entrances.

I suppose what I'm wondering is, how important is being able to sit outside and have a cigarette, to a coffee shop's success? I'm afraid within the group I know, it's pretty important, but I'm asking outside of the box.

I don't think it has much of an impact but I'm biased. I'm glad I don't really have to go through a cloud of smoke to get into restaurants around here.

Smoking and public smoking is always a complicated issue. I know smokers need to smoke somewhere and I can appreciate it being important but I'm really sensitive to the smell of it and avoid places where I know it'll be.

I'm from Ohio and we just had a state wide smoking ban go nto effect....I think overall some places will suffer, like bars and some coffee shops, and some won't, like bars and coffee shops with a product and atmosphere that spercedes the desire to smoke indoors. My favorite coffee shop for years and years has always been non smoking, and I smoke, but I'm willing to stand outside in the blustery winter if it means a better place to hang out plus delicious coffee. On the other hand, a local 24 hour coffee bar that allowed smoking has lost a ton of business. I think it's because their only draw was the fact you could go there and smoke and hang out at 4 am, their drinks were crap. Sorry so much typing, I tend to get carried away :) Good luck with the shop
